Since its inception in 1996 the ITRI Intranet had grown in excess of 20,000 pages of static content, a number of databases providing dynamic content, and a large numbers of sub intranets; it was an immense highly decentralized resource. This massive amount of information was extremely difficult to manage and extremely difficult for the end-user to navigate. At the time of the redesign the current information structure had out grown it's outgrown its ability to contain all the information they had linked together. Restructuring the Intranet was a huge challenge which required myself and a small team of librarians, information architects, writers, and engineers 2 weeks to accomplish. This was but one of many challenges, internal politics, content management, usability, user interface, and visual design all had to be dealt with.

A user-centered process was key to our success. Using participatory and non-participatory techniques we redesigned the intranet into a centralized resource, improving find ability and content management dramatically.
