Quiet Please! was an exhibition of sound Art and interactive design which attempted to change our perception of how we view and interact with music and sound. The exhibition, sponsored by the Hsinchu Cultural bureau and the Creative Lab, was scheduled to run from January 8th - 21st but was extended for an additional 2 weeks. It featured 8 pieces of sound art and tangible musical instrument prototypes.

The challenges of presenting this body of work went far beyond the just the work itself. We had to construct the exhibition space (the gallery lacked the infrastructure), install an intranet and gain access to the internet. Increased demand on the electrical and lighting systems had to be met. The whole space had to be set-up and constructed in under 3 days which required almost around the clock work of a team formed for just this purpose. As well, the project required an expansive PR effort which paid off with a huge opening day and a steady stream of visitors afterward.

Quiet Please! was part of a broader project at the Industrial Technnology Research Institute called Sme(n)ms: Shared Musical Environment for Non-Musicians. Sme(n)ms is an investigation into the creation of collaborative environments that will allow for the ongoing sharing and creation of sound events (music). The goal of such systems is to provide an easily understood yet malleable environment that allows for creative expression and communication at a rich level.
